Why this tint
A mirror coating reflects light before it ever enters the lens, so a mirrored pair can cut more without the tint underneath having to be heavier. On open water at midday, where light arrives from above and again off the surface, that front-surface reflection is doing real work.
A front-surface mirror reflects part of the incoming light rather than absorbing it, so a mirrored lens can reduce more without the tint beneath needing to be heavier. It earns its keep where light arrives twice: once from the sky and again off the surface you are looking at.
